Chemistry and Nature Project - disseminating knowledge and environment preservation awareness among children and teenagers

Challenges

  • A chemical manufacturer, Solvay Indupa do Brasil was seeking a way to create awareness among employees and the community about environment and its impact on the population's well-being
  • With a plant located close to Ribeirão Pires, in the countryside of São Paulo, they also wanted to build a closer relationship with the surrounding community, demonstrating their ethical procedures, preservation actions and interest in contributing with the local projects and the region's development
  • As a socially responsible company, Solvay also wished to enhance their investment in education, thus helping to push the country development as a whole

Strategy

  • The environmental education project Chemistry and Nature, conceived by Solvay and created and developed by Fundamento, was the solution found. Initially implemented for employee's children, it was then adapted for the region's school students, expanding its outreach
  • In order to address several age ranges, the project was designed to work in stages, each one divided into two phases: 1) dissemination of information about the environment, and 2) interaction with the environment
  • The dynamics followed this sequence and tools:
    • Program start-up - 1st stage - students from 2nd to 4th grades
    • 1st phase - a) Comics, where the characters experienced situations connected with the Nature. 2nd phase - a) Interactive game that tested the knowledge acquired in the comics. b) Drawing contest with the theme "How can I take care of the environment"
    • 2nd stage - 6th and 7th grades
    • 1st phase - a) Comics with content adapted for this age. 2nd phase - a) Collectible stickers - created with images from the region and messages about preservation
    • 3rd stage - high school students
    • 1st phase - a) Card index "An Adventure through Nature", where two characters address issues about preservation and ecology. 2nd phase - a) Small examination Chemistry and Nature, a relaxed version of the traditional entrance examinations. Always, at the end of each stage, a draw was promoted and the prizes were given to the students and to the schools they were enrolled in
Results
  • In the first year, the program reached six thousand elementary students from municipal and state schools. In the two following phases, around eight thousand elementary and high school students were involved
  • Because of the excellent results achieved, the Chemistry and Nature project evolved along the years, involving a growing target audience and adding new objectives, such as the identification of the main problems that affect the community's quality of life and the creation of an action plan, working the concepts of sustainable development and citizenship
  • Developed by Solvay up until now, the project has already reached over 30 thousand students and is one of the company's most expressive Community Relations projects, and receives the highest investment
